110 Migrants Rescued South of Crete in Two Separate Operations

Two rescue operations coordinated by Greece’s Joint Search and Rescue Coordination Centre (EKSED) saved a total of 110 migrants off the southern coast of Crete near Kaloi Limenes.

In the first operation, 51 migrants were located aboard a vessel approximately 35 nautical miles south of Kaloi Limenes. They were rescued by a Hellenic Coast Guard offshore patrol vessel, with assistance from a passing ship and a Frontex unmanned aerial vehicle (drone). The rescued individuals were safely transported to Agia Galini.

A second rescue took place shortly afterward in the wider sea area, about 44 nautical miles south of Kaloi Limenes, where 59 more migrants were saved. The operation involved another Coast Guard vessel, two nearby ships, and a Frontex drone. The rescued group was taken to Kaloi Limenes.

Greek authorities continue to monitor the region, which remains a key route for migrant crossings in the eastern Mediterranean.
