Greek Foreign Minister George Gerapetritis and Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan met on Monday during the EU Foreign Affairs Council in Luxembourg to discuss bilateral relations and recent regional and global developments.
Diplomatic sources reported that the ministers addressed Middle East developments, emphasizing the need to maintain the Gaza ceasefire and fully implement the peace plan’s first phase for regional stability. Gerapetritis outlined Greece’s commitment to strengthening the European defense industry for a more resilient and strategically independent Europe. He also reiterated that the delimitation of the Exclusive Economic Zone and continental shelf is the sole dispute between Greece and Türkiye, with sovereignty issues non-negotiable.
The ministers discussed the Eastern Mediterranean, where Gerapetritis introduced Greece’s proposal for a 5x5 multilateral meeting of coastal states, highlighting its value amid global geopolitical shifts. They also reviewed developments in occupied Cyprus and the upcoming informal expanded meeting on the Cyprus issue by the end of 2025. Gerapetritis expressed optimism about the new Turkish Cypriot leader, Tufan Erhürman, fostering hope for Cyprus’ reunification based on UN Security Council resolutions.
