Greek-Australian Society 5th Anniversary Ball Marks Five Years of Community Impact in 2025

The Greek-Australian Society (GAS) hosted its 5th Anniversary Ball in Sydney on October 17, 2025, drawing over 200 guests to celebrate milestones in Greek-Australian identity and engagement. This event highlighted the organization's growth, from mentoring programs to language revitalization efforts, fostering connections across generations. Attendees included dignitaries, community leaders, and members from various states, underscoring GAS's role in strengthening cultural ties in Australia.

Event Overview and Highlights

GAS organized the gala at Alpha, The Grand in Sydney's CBD, starting with a Welcome to Country by Aboriginal Elder Brendan Kerin and a prayer from Bishop Christodoulos of Magnesia. MCs Adriana Mageros from Sky News Australia and Themi Kallos from SBS Greek guided the evening. Guests enjoyed formal addresses, award presentations, and lively dancing. The night concluded with cake cutting and celebrations into the evening, reflecting unity and joy.

Organizers expressed gratitude to sponsors and partners, noting the event's success in building a new paradigm for the Greek-Australian community. For example, the society's mentoring program has expanded significantly, pairing 27 mentors with 39 mentees this year alone. Moreover, GAS continues to support initiatives like the Pharos Alliance for Greek language preservation.

Key Speeches and Awards at the Greek Australian Society 5th Anniversary Ball

President George Mpliokas welcomed attendees, describing GAS as an opportunity to "rethink our place in the world" and share Greek-Australian identity. NSW Minister for Multiculturalism Steve Kamper praised young Greek-Australians driving the organization, stating, "So proud to see young Greek-Australians driving this organisation,” and that both Greek and Australian identities are “inseparable" to who we are.

Opposition Leader Mark Speakman highlighted:

Filotimo, the love of honour, generosity, and duty to others…something that all of us could have more of, not only around the world, but here on Australian shores.

Consul General of Greece in Sydney Giorgios Skemperis also joined in the formalities, presenting Appreciation Awards to GAS Major Sponsors and Media Partners in a gesture of goodwill and sincere thanks. Mr Skemperis encouraged the night’s attendees to “make your own Greece in your heart,” and also said,

Everyone has a different kind of Greece in their heart, and that is not a bad thing

While High Commissioner Antonis Sammoutis joined in presenting appreciation awards to sponsors, the inaugural Emmanuel Alfieris Award went to Ari Paraskakis for his community commitment. Thus, the speeches reinforced GAS's focus on heritage and future leadership.

Attendees and Community Representation

The ball attracted diverse participants from Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Canberra, Adelaide, Greece, and Scotland. Notable figures included Dr. Hugh McDermott MP, who delivered a vote of thanks, and representatives from organizations such as the Cretan Association and the Kytherian Association. This mix promoted intergenerational dialogue, with young members experiencing community events for the first time.

Furthermore, media partners such as Greek City Times received recognition, highlighting GAS's collaborative approach. Consequently, the event strengthened networks within Australia's Greek diaspora, which remains vibrant despite challenges like declining language use.

GAS Achievements and Future Outlook

Over five years, GAS has grown to over 650 members nationwide, focusing on professional development and cultural promotion. Initiatives include partnerships with the Australian Museum and efforts to revitalize the use of Greek. Looking ahead, GAS plans to launch a Young Leaders Program and expand nationally. Therefore, the 5th Anniversary Ball not only celebrated past successes but also set the stage for continued impact.
