Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers has stepped down following a disappointing start to the Scottish Premiership season, reigniting speculation that former boss Ange Postecoglou could make a sensational return to the club.
Rodgers’s resignation came after Sunday’s 3–1 defeat to Hearts, which left the defending champions eight points behind the Edinburgh side and with just 19 points from nine matches. Celtic confirmed the news late Monday, stating: “Celtic Football Club can confirm that football manager Brendan Rodgers has today tendered his resignation. It has been accepted by the club and Brendan will leave his role with immediate effect. The club appreciates Brendan's contribution to Celtic during his two very successful periods at the club.”
Former Celtic manager Martin O’Neill and ex-player Shaun Maloney have been appointed as interim coaches while the club considers long-term options.
Attention has quickly turned to Ange Postecoglou, who enjoyed two trophy-laden seasons at Celtic, winning consecutive league titles and completing a domestic treble in 2022–23 before moving to the English Premier League with Tottenham Hotspur.
After a brief but mixed spell in England — where he led Spurs to a Europa League triumph but was later dismissed — the 60-year-old Australian endured another short-lived tenure at Nottingham Forest, lasting just eight games without a win before being sacked earlier this month.
Whether Postecoglou would consider a return to Glasgow remains uncertain, but his name has already emerged as a fan favourite for the job he once dominated with attacking football and success.
