Turkey has denounced the European Commission’s latest progress report as “biased, prejudiced, and baseless,” after Brussels accused the country of democratic erosion, curbs on judicial independence, and violations of fundamental rights.
In a sharply worded statement, the Turkish Foreign Ministry said the report on justice, fundamental rights, and political developments “ignores Turkey’s legitimate concerns and adopts the unlawful, maximalist positions of Greece and the Greek Cypriot side.”
Ankara argued the EU’s stance “proves once again” that it cannot play an impartial role in resolving the Cyprus issue. The ministry added that the language of the report “contradicts the long-term interests of both Turkey and the EU” and undermines efforts to build a positive agenda.
Turkey nonetheless welcomed references to its “constructive stance in the Eastern Mediterranean,” improved ties with Greece, and stable macroeconomic policies. It urged Brussels to lift restrictive measures imposed in 2019 and called for “stronger, trust-based cooperation.”
