Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan signaled a conciliatory message on Monday, asserting that Turkey has no territorial or resource ambitions in neighboring countries amid renewed international focus on the Eastern Mediterranean energy corridor and debates over Turkey’s role in European security.
Speaking to his parliamentary group, Erdogan said, “We have never had ambitions over the territories, sovereignty, or underground and aboveground resources of other countries. We respect the sovereign rights of all friendly nations, especially our neighbors.” Analysts noted that the statement appears aimed at reassuring Washington and Brussels while affirming Turkey’s interest in playing a regional role.
Erdogan also highlighted Turkey’s military presence abroad as a stabilizing force rather than a threat, claiming the Turkish armed forces have contributed to peace, security, and stability wherever they operate within international law. “May our armed forces continue to defend peace, solidarity, and fraternity in every region where they are present,” he said.
He additionally framed Turkey’s foreign military operations as welcomed by local populations, portraying them as protective and beneficial. Erdogan concluded by asserting that the Turkish flag will continue to inspire trust among allies, emphasizing continuity in Turkey’s regional influence.
