Greek Government spokesperson Pavlos Marinakis said Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis will soon announce new measures on gun ownership and licensing, following the deadly shooting in the Cretan village of Vorizia.
Speaking to Mega TV, Marinakis said the announcements could come “within the next two or three days” and will include “specific initiatives on firearm ownership, the issuing of licenses, and stricter controls.” He emphasized that the measures “will not be just words.”
The comments come as police confirmed they have video evidence showing a 43-year-old man firing a Kalashnikov rifle during the Vorizia shootout, which left two people dead and several injured.
Marinakis stressed that residents of Crete should not be unfairly stigmatized, adding that Public Order Minister Michalis Chrysochoidis has already outlined plans for a permanent Organized Crime Division unit to be stationed on the island.
“This is not an issue that should divide us,” Marinakis said, noting that political leaders—including opposition chief Nikos Androulakis, who is also from Crete—should work together to address the problem of gun violence.
