A major search and rescue operation is underway involving Greek Coast Guard vessels and Air Force helicopters to locate any missing persons in the area as a dramatic video has surfaced showing a small boat just minutes before it capsized off the island of Gavdos, south of Crete.
So far, 56 people have been rescued and are being transported to the port of Agia Galini in southern Rethymno aboard a FRONTEX vessel.
Those suffering from health issues, primarily hypothermia, will be taken to nearby hospitals, while the others are expected to arrive at the Agia Exhibition Centre in Chania early in the morning for initial reception and accommodation.
Among the rescued are two women and two young children, all reported to be in good health.
Authorities continue to comb the area with heightened vigilance as rescue teams coordinate efforts to ensure the safe transfer of survivors and the possible recovery of missing individuals.
Local residents and officials are following developments anxiously as the rescue operation continues through the night.
