Greek authorities have identified a large-scale prescription fraud scheme involving 32 doctors and 62 pharmacies, according to new findings released by the National Organisation for Healthcare Services Provision (EOPYY). The case emerged following extensive October audits by EOPYY’s Directorate of Pharmaceuticals, with the issue formally discussed at a meeting held on 6 November at the organisation’s headquarters.
Auditors reported an estimated €12 million in financial damage linked to illegal prescriptions issued and dispensed by the implicated medical professionals and pharmacies. As a result, EOPYY has imposed fines totalling €98,500.
The Directorate of Pharmaceuticals also disclosed that additional audits are under way, involving 10 doctors and 80 pharmacies connected to three case files forwarded by the Financial Police.
EOPYY officials emphasise that the investigation remains active and that further penalties may be announced as additional evidence is assessed. The organisation has intensified monitoring of prescription practices in recent months to curb fraud and protect public healthcare funds.
