New Book Celebrates Greek-Australian Legacy in Oakleigh

A new publication has put the spotlight on Oakleigh’s vibrant Greek-Australian community and its lasting impact on the City of Monash.

“Oakleigh is Our Life: Greek Settlement in Oakleigh”, written by History Monash Inc. secretary Ann Nield and supported by a City of Monash Community Grant, chronicles the arrival and settlement of Greek migrants in the suburb. The book examines why so many chose Oakleigh, how they built a tight-knit community, and the ways they have successfully preserved their language, Orthodox faith, and cultural traditions across generations.

Through personal interviews with Greek-Australian families, combined with historical context and recent research, the book brings to life the courage and determination of those who crossed the world to begin anew in post-war Australia.

The launch coincides with colourful footpath projections along Eaton Mall throughout September 2025, further highlighting Oakleigh’s proud Hellenic heritage.
