Greece declares three days of mourning after soldier killed

Greece’s Armed Forces declared a three-day mourning period after a 19-year-old professional soldier was killed during a scheduled grenade-training exercise on Rhodes, Defence Minister Nikos Dendias announced Wednesday.

The soldier died at the Afantou firing range, while a 39-year-old sergeant who was with him suffered severe injuries, including the amputation of an upper limb.

Both were rushed to Rhodes General Hospital, where the 19-year-old was pronounced dead.

The sergeant was intubated in critical condition, though doctors later said his condition had stabilized before he was transferred to the ICU of the 401 Military Hospital in Athens.
