Restoration of Agia Sophia in Drama Nears Completion

The Greek Ministry of Culture has announced the completion of restoration and enhancement works at the Church of Hagia Sophia in Drama, the city’s most significant Byzantine monument.

Following extensive archaeological excavations that uncovered an earlier Early Christian phase, restoration efforts focus on selected interventions based on findings from the excavation. The project aims to showcase the church’s historical, religious, and aesthetic value, preserving its status as a landmark in Drama’s historic center.

The restoration, with a budget of €1,084,000, is funded by the Regional Operational Program of Eastern Macedonia-Thrace under the 2021–2027 NSRF framework.

Culture Minister Lina Mendoni stated: “Hagia Sophia in Drama stands as a living testament to the city’s long history and spiritual influence. This restoration is not merely technical—it is an act of respect for our cultural heritage. The project will structurally and morphologically restore the church to reflect its form as preserved until the 19th century, ensuring its protection and prominence as a site of historical, architectural, and spiritual significance for the citizens of Drama.”

Dating to the 10th century, the church is believed to have served as the katholikon of a Byzantine monastery. It is a characteristic example of domed Byzantine architecture, illustrating Drama’s prominence during the Middle Byzantine period. Hagia Sophia continues to function as a parish church under the Metropolis of Drama, a role it will maintain into the future.

The restoration includes structural reinforcement, removal of modern additions that distort the monument’s original character, morphological restoration of walls and openings, conservation of painted decoration, and comprehensive enhancement of the surrounding space with accessibility provisions. These works also aim to protect and highlight archaeological remains from the underlying Early Christian basilica.

Minister Mendoni acknowledged the contribution of Eastern Macedonia-Thrace Regional Governor Christodoulos Topsidis for including the project in the NSRF program and for the excellent cooperation.
