Greek authorities have arrested a 61-year-old Turkish national on the island of Chios on suspicion of espionage.
The man had been under discreet surveillance by the Hellenic National Intelligence Service (EYP) and the Coast Guard Security Service prior to his arrest. While a Turkish red notice was reportedly outstanding against him for robbery charges, Greek prosecutors in Chios ordered an investigation into espionage after equipment suggesting spying activities was discovered at his residence near the port.
Authorities seized binoculars, a telephoto lens, and five mobile phones, which have been sent to the Directorate of Forensic Investigations for analysis to determine how and where they were used. Investigators are also examining the suspect’s contacts as part of the ongoing probe.
The case highlights heightened vigilance by Greek security services on strategic islands close to international maritime routes.
