Greek authorities are warning of a cold front expected to sweep across the country on Thursday and Friday, bringing heavy rains and storms to much of the mainland and the Aegean islands.
The most intense weather conditions are forecast for Friday, according to meteorologists.
A risk assessment committee convened on Wednesday to prepare for the approaching front. While precipitation—including prolonged snowfall—can help alleviate water shortages affecting some areas and islands, sudden and heavy rainfall or snow often leads to serious problems, such as flooding, landslides, blocked roads, and power outages.
Authorities have issued a “red code” alert for nine regions, including the greater Athens-Piraeus area, through Saturday. Civil protection agencies and first responders are on high alert to manage potential emergencies.
