Greece Named World’s Best Country to Retire in

Greece has been ranked the number one country in the world to retire to in 2026, according to International Living’s Annual Global Retirement Index.

The Index evaluates retirement destinations worldwide on key factors including cost of living, healthcare, housing, visas, climate, and ease of integration. Greece topped the list, followed by Panama, Costa Rica, Portugal, Mexico, Italy, France, Spain, Thailand, and Malaysia.

Jennifer Stevens, Executive Editor of International Living, commented:
"Greece’s rise to number one marks a shift in Europe’s retirement landscape. For years, Portugal and Spain led the way, but rising costs and visa changes have retirees looking elsewhere. Greece now offers a beautiful, welcoming, and affordable European base with accessible residency options and a lifestyle that feels rich in every sense."

A major draw is Greece’s Golden Visa program, granting residence permits to foreigners who make a minimum investment of €250,000 (A$440,000). The country also boasts more than 300 days of sunshine per year, over 6,000 islands (227 inhabited), and a cost of living that remains attractive compared to many European nations.

Typical expenses highlight the affordability: a three-course meal for two at a mid-range restaurant costs around €50 (A$90), and a coffee averages €3.43 (A$6). Rent can be significantly cheaper than in the UK, with one retiree paying just €800 (A$1,400) per month including bills.

For those seeking adventure beyond Santorini, Greece offers hidden gems like Thassos, featuring historical sites, beaches, and a relaxed lifestyle. Residents also praise the strong sense of local community and cultural richness.

Travel to Greece will also become easier, as Wizz Air announces flights next spring to four new destinations: Chania, Mykonos, Rhodes, and Zakynthos. Mykonos will be served three times a week, while the other three islands will have twice-weekly flights.

Greece’s combination of sunny weather, rich culture, affordability, and accessibility makes it the ultimate retirement destination for 2026.
