Heavy Rain Hits Attica: 97 mm Recorded in Vlychada as Fire Service Handles 90 Emergency Calls

Significant rainfall has been recorded across Attica prefecture, including the city of Athens, since midday on Thursday, 4 December, in line with the forecasts issued in recent days, according to meteo.gr / National Observatory of Athens.

As of 18:00 on Thursday, the highest cumulative rainfall totals recorded by the automatic weather stations of the National Observatory of Athens / meteo.gr network were in Vlychada, Attica (97 mm) and Vilia, Attica (76 mm).

At the same time, the Fire Service’s Operations Centre has received 90 calls so far, of which:

  • 60 were for pumping out floodwater,
  • 17 were for tree removals, and
  • 4 were for rescuing and transferring people to safety from vehicles that had become stranded on flooded roads, mainly in the Aspropyrgos area.

According to the Fire Service, most calls have come from the southern suburbs, western Attica (Elefsina and Aspropyrgos), and the municipality of Athens.
