Hellenic Medical Society of Australia Christmas Celebration 2025

The Hellenic Medical Society of Australia (HMSA) held its Christmas celebration on Friday, December 5, 2025, at the Greek Centre in Melbourne. This well-attended event brought together Greek Australian doctors, community leaders, and representatives from various organisations. Attendees reflected on the year's achievements in a festive and relaxed atmosphere.

Hellenic Medical Society of Australia Christmas celebration speakers delivered messages of connection and collaboration. Moreover, the evening highlighted significant milestones and expressed gratitude to contributors. Consequently, participants left with strengthened ties and festive cheer.

Key Speakers Highlight Unity and Achievements

Associate Professor Marinis Pirpiris, HMSA president, addressed the gathering. He shared exciting news about legislative changes in Greece. After extensive discussions, the parliament passed laws enabling the mutual recognition of Australian medical degrees.

“This achievement is more than a legal reform – it is a bridge between the two nations,” Pirpiris noted.

It strengthens opportunities for young clinicians and honours the excellence of Australian medical education. The impact of this change will be felt for generations.

Additionally, Mr Bill Papastergiadis OAM, president of the Greek Community of Melbourne, spoke on collaboration. Ms Georgia Dimopoulou from the Greek National Tourism Organisation emphasized cultural and professional links between Australia and Greece.

However, efforts for this recognition have built over time. Earlier in 2025, HMSA leaders discussed reciprocal degree recognition with Greek officials, signaling progress toward stronger bilateral ties.

Acknowledging Contributions and Partnerships

The Christmas celebration provided a platform to thank HMSA members and collaborators. Pirpiris acknowledged board members for their significant contributions, including Dr Arthur Athanasios Kokkinias, Associate Professor Spiros Fourlanos, Dr Maria Raftopoulos, and Dr George Koufogiannis.

Furthermore, he expressed gratitude to the members who presented and supported events on topics such as fertility and neuro-oncology. The society also thanked community partners for their successful initiatives, including International Women's Day, HMSA Careers Day, and the Gala Ball.

Attendees included representatives from the Greek Community of Melbourne, including Bill Papastergiadis OAM, Dr Dora Papamakarios, Simela Stamatopoulos, and Manuel Tsirmiris. Others present were Pronia representatives Elpis Korosidis, Sylvia Hadjiantoniou, Paul Orfanos, and Anna Tadese, along with Mayor Emily Dimitriadis, Dean Kalymniou, Katy Karabatsos, Peter Gavos, Bill Petridis, and MUNGA representatives Athanasios Pirpiris, Christina Damigos, and Cherie Katsoulis. Fotini Kypraios from HACCI sent apologies.

Sponsors received thanks for their support throughout the year. These included DBG Health, Greek Media Group (3XY/Ta Nea), Genomic Diagnostics, Accountancy Group, Zaparas Lawyers, Mantzis Family Trust, and Alex Bros Jewellers. Media partners comprised Greek Media Group, Greek City Times, Apolis Magazine, and Roula Krikellis.

HMSA's Role in the Greek Australian Community

The society also supports fundraising and community education. Therefore, collaborations with organisations such as the Greek Community of Melbourne are essential for success.

Hellenic Medical Society of Australia Looking Forward to 2026

HMSA leaders shared plans for the upcoming year. They aim to create more events promoting education, heritage links, and improved health outcomes.

This Christmas celebration reinforced unity among Greek Australian doctors. It celebrated past successes while building excitement for future initiatives.
