Police have issued an urgent warning for the public to avoid Sydney’s Bondi Beach following a shooting that left multiple people injured, including a police officer.
Emergency services responded after reports of gunfire at the popular beachside location, where authorities believe a Hanukkah event was targeted. Police sources say the attack may have been planned over several months.
According to initial information, one alleged gunman was shot dead at the scene, while a second suspect was shot and taken into custody. Emergency services are providing medical treatment to the suspect, police said.
Authorities have confirmed there are multiple casualties, with civilians assisting injured victims before emergency responders secured the area. Vision from the scene shows police officers providing aid to injured individuals on the ground, while a firearm and spent shotgun shells were visible nearby.
In a statement, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese confirmed authorities were responding to the incident.
“We are aware of an active security situation in Bondi,” the Prime Minister said. “We urge people in the vicinity to follow information from NSW Police.”
Witnesses described scenes of panic as gunshots rang out. One mother told media her two daughters, who had been swimming nearby with friends, were caught up in the chaos as people fled the area.
