A dramatic turn of events has unfolded in Aigio following a violent assault inside the local hospital, with a patient who attacked a doctor now confirmed dead.
According to the president of the Panhellenic Federation of Public Hospital Employees (POEDIN), the deceased was a boxer who had presented himself at the Aigio Hospital emergency department seeking first aid before launching a brutal attack on a doctor, causing serious injuries. The death was confirmed by POEDIN president Michalis Giannakos, who noted that the man had reportedly been involved in similar incidents in the past.
The assault was reported by the doctor himself, who later described the traumatic ordeal in an interview with Greek television network MEGA.
The initial incident occurred on Friday morning, when the 44-year-old man arrived at the hospital for medical examination. According to information, he strongly disagreed with the doctor over the way his medical issue was being handled. The verbal dispute quickly escalated into a violent physical attack.
Police were immediately notified and opened a case file. However, the attacker had already fled the hospital and was being sought under the flagrant offence procedure. Reports indicate he remained in hiding in an effort to avoid arrest.
On Sunday, the case took a tragic turn. The 44-year-old reportedly returned to Aigio Hospital accompanied by his brother, suffering from severe pain. Despite doctors’ efforts, he died shortly afterward.
According to another account, he was transported deceased to the hospital on Sunday afternoon by an EKAB ambulance. The exact cause of death has not yet been determined.
Authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding his death, with a forensic examination expected to clarify whether it is linked to the health issue for which he initially sought treatment on Friday.
The hospital reportedly turned into a “boxing ring” on Friday night when the patient allegedly punched an orthopaedic doctor repeatedly in the face and body.
Speaking publicly, the doctor said he did not know the attacker and that there had been no prior confrontation between them.
“He was frightened by a movement I made when I stood up from my desk. He thought I was going to hit him. I had never seen him in my life,” the doctor said, describing the attacker’s behaviour as irrational and childlike.
The doctor stated that the man, a boxer and fitness trainer, approached him aggressively, repeatedly telling him, “I don’t like your face,” before launching the assault.
“For 20 minutes, half an hour, he was punching me continuously,” the doctor said. “He threw me around the office. I kept telling him, ‘I haven’t done anything to you,’ but he kept hitting me.”
The doctor suffered serious facial injuries, including deep wounds that required stitches to his eyebrow, along with injuries to his nose and head.
The attacker was reportedly known to police for previous criminal activity and had served prison time in the past, including convictions related to drugs.
The victim doctor alleged that the man may have been under the influence of alcohol or narcotics and suggested a possible psychiatric background, citing information from nursing staff about previous aggressive behaviour toward hospital personnel.
