Fugitive Wanted by Turkish Authorities Arrested in Greece

Greek police arrested a 41-year-old foreign national in the Neos Kosmos district of Athens on Wednesday morning, December 12, following an international arrest warrant issued by Turkish authorities for a series of serious crimes.

According to the Hellenic Police (ELAS), the man is wanted in Turkey on charges including drug trafficking, robbery, theft and damage to property. Authorities said he was apprehended during a police operation in the area.

ELAS reported that in August 2017 the suspect allegedly oversaw a cannabis plantation involving 113 marijuana plants in a region of Turkey. He is also accused of carrying out a robbery at company offices in 2014 and stealing boat engines in 2009.

After his arrest, the 41-year-old was taken before the competent public prosecutor so that formal extradition procedures to Turkey can begin, in line with legal provisions.

The case highlights ongoing cooperation between Greek authorities and international law enforcement agencies in tracking down fugitives sought for serious criminal offences.
