Music, Surf and Frozen Lakes Mark Some Christmas Celebrations

People around the world celebrated Christmas in unique ways this year, shaped by local traditions and conditions, from official ceremonies and musical moments to daring plunges into icy or summer waters, expressing the festive spirit through emotion, symbolism and solidarity.

United Kingdom
At Westminster Abbey, attention turned to Princess Kate and young Princess Charlotte, who shared a touching musical moment during the Christmas event. Mother and daughter sat together at the piano to perform Holm Sound by Scottish composer Erland Cooper, offering a tender highlight of the celebration.

Kate Middleton also spoke about the deeper meaning of Christmas, stressing that love is shown through simple, everyday acts. “At its heart, Christmas speaks to the love that grows in the simplest, most human ways,” she said.

Australia
On the other side of the world, Australians honoured tradition with a Christmas swim at Bondi Beach. Despite the smiles and festive mood, a shadow lingered after a recent terrorist attack at the same beach around two weeks earlier, which affected the atmosphere.

Swimmers posed in front of a Christmas tree wearing Santa hats, sending a message of unity and resilience as they embraced the holiday spirit.

United States
At Cocoa Beach in Florida, Christmas took on a strong surfing theme. Red suits, white beards and surfboards filled the shoreline as hundreds gathered to watch surfers dressed as Santa Claus ride the waves. The event also carried a charitable purpose, raising support for an organisation that helps people battling cancer.

Germany
In Berlin, the cold failed to deter the bravest participants. With temperatures dropping to around minus eight degrees Celsius, residents once again took part in the traditional Christmas dip in the icy waters of Lake Orankesee.

The tradition, which spans more than 40 years and takes place shortly before the end of the year, symbolises endurance, renewal and the festive spirit.

From solemn royal ceremonies to playful and daring swims, Christmas celebrations once again showcased the rich diversity of customs that unite people worldwide in the spirit of the season.
