A pod of dolphins rescued British swimmer Rob Hoey and his daughter from a great white shark while they swam off New Zealand’s North Island. The dolphins circled the pair tightly, herding them away from danger and refusing to let them leave until the predator retreated.
Hoey said the encounter began peacefully, but the dolphins suddenly appeared and surrounded them, blocking their path whenever he tried to swim elsewhere. Witnesses described the dolphins’ behaviour as deliberate and highly coordinated.
Moments later, a nearly three-metre-long great white shark entered the area. The dolphins reacted instantly, slapping the water with their tails, darting in precise bursts, and positioning themselves directly between the swimmers and the shark.
For nearly 40 minutes, the pod maintained a tight defensive formation, driving the predator away and keeping Hoey and his daughter safe. Lifeguards and beachgoers watched the extraordinary scene unfold from the shore.
Once the shark retreated, the dolphins broke their circle, allowing the pair to swim safely back to land. Experts say the incident highlights dolphins’ intelligence and their remarkable tendency to protect humans in perilous situations.
