Istanbul, Turkey - August 24, 2024 - The historic Aghios Eleftherios Cemetery, serving the Greek Orthodox community of Istanbul's Kurtulus district, was the target of a disturbing act of vandalism on Friday morning.

Upon arrival, cemetery staff discovered extensive damage: the perimeter barbed wire had been cut, numerous headstones were defaced or broken, holes were dug throughout the grounds, and shockingly, the guard dogs responsible for protecting the site had been sedated.

Local police were immediately notified and are currently investigating the incident, collecting evidence and documenting the damage.

The cemetery’s board of trustees expressed deep sorrow and outrage over the attack, calling it an assault "not only on a cemetery, but also on a deep-rooted cultural heritage and religion." They expressed confidence in the Turkish police to swiftly bring the perpetrators to justice.

Established in 1865, the Aghios Eleftherios Cemetery holds a significant place in the history of Istanbul's Greek Orthodox community. This act of desecration has caused widespread concern and condemnation.

Disturbingly, the vandalism coincided with the divine liturgy held at the historic Sumela Monastery, an event which faced strong opposition from Turkish nationalist groups. While no direct link has been established, the timing of the cemetery attack raises concerns about potential motives and underscores the vulnerability of minority religious sites.
