At the age of 79, the distinguished actor Spyros Stavrinides passed away. His health had deteriorated over the past two weeks, and he was admitted to the ICU, but he succumbed to a heart attack early Sunday morning (13/04).
“The passing of Spyros Stavrinides is a significant loss for Cypriot theater and the broader arts community in our country,” stated the President of the Republic of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides, in a written statement.
One of the finest performers and a member of the golden generation that laid the foundations for modern Cypriot theater, Spyros Stavrinides remained tireless and active until just months before his death. He passed away on the morning of April 13, as announced by the Cyprus Actors’ Union.
A charismatic and generous figure, Stavrinides enjoyed a remarkable career spanning over five decades. He served the theater with passion, courage, and dedication, constantly reinventing himself and his place on stage. In recent years, he appeared regularly in productions, actively supporting and believing in the new generation of Cypriot theater. Until his final moments, his concern was the theater, and it would not be an exaggeration to say he died in the line of duty.
Excerpt: “It’s a thirst that never fades. I can’t rest when I have a role, especially when it involves such significant works and substantial parts. Without motivation, you can’t last a minute on stage. I hold onto that drive. Many urge me to direct, but I don’t want to direct—I’m not a director. I want to act. And I’ll act as long as my legs hold me and my mind is sharp. Until my final curtain,” he said in an interview with Cyprus’ Phileleftheros.
“His dedication to the art, his sensitivity, and his boundless energy on stage left an indelible mark on countless performances, inspiring colleagues and audiences alike. His contribution to the Theatrical Organization of Cyprus and the broader theatrical landscape of the country was invaluable, while his humanity and integrity will remain a model for us all,” stated the Cyprus Actors’ Union in their announcement.
