Presidential guards rescued a woman who set herself on fire outside a central Athens venue Wednesday morning, earning praise from the country’s president.
The 67-year-old woman set herself on fire around 10 a.m. in front of the Aigli Zappiou, but Evzones from the Presidential Guard who were conducting rehearsals nearby quickly put out the flames using fire extinguishers.
The woman, reportedly homeless and suffering from psychological problems, was transported to a hospital with burns.
President Konstantinos Tasoulas visited the Presidential Guard barracks and congratulated the officers and Evzones for their decisiveness and readiness to act.
