YAL Conference 2025: Uniting Greek Orthodox Young Adults in Faith

Speakers at YAL Conference 2025 inspire youth

The YAL Conference 2025 brought together over 165 young Greek Orthodox adults in New York City from September 18 to 21, reviving a beloved tradition after a hiatus of over 20 years. Hosted by the Archdiocesan District of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America, this event embraced the theme "Encounter." It fostered deep connections with Christ and community, aligning with the growing interest in Orthodox youth programs.

Held under the auspices of His Eminence Archbishop Elpidophoros of America and with the spiritual guidance of Fr. Elias Villas, Chancellor of the Archdiocesan District. The conference was organized through the Youth and Young Adult Ministry, led by Director Constantine Pantelias, and chaired by Konstantinos Ouranitsas. Mr. Ouranitsas, who co-chaired the National YAL Conference in New York in 2022, also serves on the Parish Council of St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church and National Shrine at the World Trade Center. In attendance were Hon. Petros Dorizas, Consul of Greece in New York, and Hon. Kyriakos Pogiatzis, Consul General of Cyprus in New York.

Patriarchal Encounter at St. Nicholas Shrine

A defining moment occurred at the St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church and National Shrine. His All-Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew inspired attendees, saying, "You are much more than the future of our Church—you are also the now." Archbishop Elpidophoros welcomed him, noting the youth’s eagerness for his wisdom. Fr. Andreas Vithoulkas introduced the shrine’s unique iconography, tying it to its legacy of 9/11.

A dynamic discussion featured actor George Xanthis and cinematographer Akis Konstantakopoulos from The Chosen, moderated by Fr. Elias Villas. Ouranitsas described his meeting with Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew as a “heartfelt encounter,” deeply moving and unforgettable. Fr. Barnabas Powell from Georgia emphasized Orthodoxy as a remedy for modern isolation, urging youth to lead with faith. This event, part of Bartholomew’s U.S. visit, drew young adults from across the nation.

Faith & Leadership: Shaping Orthodox Young Adults

The Faith & Leadership Conference inspired attendees with valuable insights from distinguished speakers. Fr. Chrysostomos Gilbert, Dean of the Archdiocesan Cathedral, offered spiritual guidance, while Consul General Kyriakos Pogiatzis of Cyprus discussed cultural connections. Additionally, Archon Petros Vlitas and Ms. Despina Kartson spoke about the Hellenic Identity and giving back. At the same time, H.E. George Tsunis, former U.S. Ambassador to Greece, and Archon Lou Katsos spoke about Ethnika themata, sharing about current events impacting the Church and Greece, and encouraged participants to get involved in the community.

Consequently, attendees gained practical tools for their roles in the church and community. Social media posts highlighted how these talks reignited passion for Orthodox Hellenism. The conference built upon past successes, such as the 2022 National YAL Weekend, and was supported by a Leadership 100 grant.

Fellowship Through Cruises and Worship

The YAL Conference 2025 struck a balance between inspiration and connection. A New York Harbor cruise offered stunning views and provided an opportunity for casual bonding. The Beacon of Hope Dinner After-Party took place at Casa Cipriani for the St. Nicholas National Shrine, celebrating resilience and unity. Furthermore, Sunday’s Divine Liturgy united attendees in prayer, deepening their sense of community.
