Mitsotakis Meets Singapore’s Prime Minister: Shipping, Exports and Investment Opportunities at the Forefront

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis met on Thursday morning with his Singaporean counterpart, Lawrence Wong, and was also received by the President of the Republic Tharman Shanmugaratnam at the Istana government complex in Singapore.

During the meeting with Wong, the two leaders explored the significant potential for strengthening bilateral cooperation across a broad range of sectors — including tourism, shipping, defence and Greek exports, particularly agri-food products. They also discussed wider investment opportunities in Greece.

The leaders exchanged views on cooperation and knowledge-sharing in digital governance, as well as the use of artificial intelligence in public administration.

Key points of discussion

Kyriakos Mitsotakis highlighted the continuation and consolidation of Greece’s reforms, placing particular emphasis on the country’s dual role as an energy hub for Southeast Europe and a provider of energy security for Central and Eastern Europe. In this context, he referred to the recent agreement for supplying Ukraine with US LNG during President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s visit to Athens.

The two leaders also reaffirmed shared positions, such as their commitment to International Law and the Law of the Sea, multilateralism, and free trade.

The Prime Minister expressed Greece’s support for strengthening EU–Singapore relations. Singapore, as a member of ASEAN, plays an important role in one of the world’s fastest-growing regions.

Opening remarks

At the start of their meeting, Prime Minister Mitsotakis and Prime Minister Lawrence Wong exchanged the following introductory comments:

Kyriakos Mitsotakis:
“It is a real pleasure to be here. It has been a long time since a Greek Prime Minister last visited Singapore. We are both maritime nations, and both countries are strongly committed to maintaining a rules-based international order. For us, it is important to share with the Asian public what has happened in Greece in recent years. We have begun attracting investments from Singapore, and we certainly want these flows to continue and expand. So, it is a great opportunity to be here.”

Lawrence Wong:
“And your economy has been performing very well under your leadership. We see that it continues to take off, and we see many new opportunities in Greece and in Europe, thanks to the free trade agreement and various EU–Singapore accords already in force. Through these, we hope to further strengthen our economic ties.”

Meeting with Singapore’s President

Prime Minister Mitsotakis was later received by the President of Singapore, Tharman Shanmugaratnam, with whom he exchanged views on issues of mutual interest.

As part of his two-day visit, Mitsotakis also met with Metropolitan Konstantinos of Singapore and South Asia, as well as representatives of the Greek community.

Bloomberg New Economy Forum

On Friday, the Prime Minister will participate in the Bloomberg New Economy Forum, which brings together investors, leaders, officials and representatives from Asia, the US and Europe.

During the Forum, Mitsotakis will take part in a public discussion with Bloomberg’s Editor-in-Chief, John Micklethwait, focusing on Europe and the economic, political, geopolitical and energy challenges in a rapidly changing world.
