Statue of Greek god uncovered by archaeologists during excavation of ancient Roman sewer in Bulgaria
Archaeologists near Bulgaria's southeastern border with Greece have made a remarkable discovery—a nearly 7-foot statue of the ancient Greek god Hermes. This unexpected find occurred amidst the excavation of an ancient Roman sewer in the deserted city of Heraclea Sintica, established by King Philip II of Macedon between 356 and 339 B.C.E. Heraclea Sintica was abandoned following a catastrophic earthquake in 388 A.D.
Stunned researchers discover that, in addition to accurately tracing the movement of the sun, moon and predicting when eclipses would occur, the Antikythera Mechanism created by the Ancient Greeks around 100-200BC also tracked the movements of Venus and Saturn. "Our work reveals the Antikythera Mechanism as a beautiful conception, translated by superb engineering into a device of genius," the study concludes about the creation considered to be the world's first computer.
