The Crete-Attica electrical interconnection, Greece’s largest and most advanced energy transmission project, has reached a major milestone with the successful completion of the Site Acceptance Test (SAT). Spanning 380 kilometers and incorporating cutting-edge direct current technology, the €1.1 billion project is set to launch in spring 2025, enhancing Greece’s energy reliability and sustainability.
METLEN Energy & Metals has announced a €295.5 million investment to develop an integrated production line for bauxite, alumina, and gallium in Agios Nikolaos, Greece. The project aims to increase Europe’s self-sufficiency in critical raw materials, with a production capacity of 2 million tons of bauxite, 1.265 million tons of alumina, and 50 metric tons of gallium annually. This investment will enhance Europe’s strategic autonomy, reduce dependence on China, and support industries from energy transition to defense. Production is expected to begin in 2026, with full capacity achieved by 2028.
US Assistant Secretary for Energy Resources Geoffrey Pyatt highlighted the Vertical Corridor project’s potential to strengthen Greece’s role in regional energy security during his visit to Athens. He described the project as cost-effective and beneficial for collaboration among transmission system operators. Pyatt praised Greece’s leadership in energy transition and its ambition to be a key energy hub for the EU while emphasising the importance of decoupling from Russian energy supplies.
