The island of Crete signed a direct trade agreement on Thursday with the Chinese region of Guangxi Zhuang, which has an estimated population of over 40 million.

The trade and tourism deal was signed off following the Chinese delegation’s visit on the island where they briefed on the region’s products and the development of incoming tourism from China to Crete and Greece in general.

The collaboration agreement was signed by the deputy regional director of Crete in European and international issues, Giorgos Alexakis, and his counterpart Zhang Xiao Qin.

Alexakis said that 100,000 Chinese nationals visited Greece in 2016 for holidays, while 35,000 Greeks visited China.

The inflows on each end will be encouraged by the direct Beijing-Athens airline connection, he added.
