Four foreign nationals arrested for illegal migrant trafficking in Thessaloniki

Greek police have announced the arrest of four foreign nationals from Afghanistan and Pakistan with charges of trafficking 65 illegal migrants, as well as their abduction and extortion.

The arrests were made in a joint operation by the Thessaloniki Migration Management department and the Xanthi Border Police.

The 65 foreign nationals were being held against their will in a building in Volvi, Central Macedonia with the suspects allegedly demanding 1,500-3,000 euros from each migrant for their release.

Three of the suspects were caught when they approached the building in a car to let off more illegal migrants in the early hours of Wednesday morning, while a fourth man acting as a guard was found inside the premises.

The migrants had entered Greece via the Greek-Turkish border.

According to authorities, a large investigation is underway.
