A 2-month-old baby girl was tragically killed on Thursday by the family dog, a Rottweiler, at Glyka Nera a suburb in northeastern Athens.

According to a statement made by the 35-year-old mother to police, the father of the baby was at work, the mother was in the bathroom cleaning, and the baby was asleep in the lounge room. The mother said the Rottweiler was on the balcony when it suddenly ripped through the screen door and entered the apartment, grabbing the baby girl. When the mother walked out, she found the baby on the balcony severely bitten by the dog.

The distraught mother, who is said to be in a complete state of shock, quickly rushed the 2-month-old to Penteli Hospital but it was too late, as the infant had been bitten all over her body and the doctors pronounced her dead.

Psychologists are said to be supporting the parents, who also have three sons and according to the baby’s grandmother, the couple was trying for years to have a girl and were elated when their daughter finally arrived two months ago.

The dog was taken away by police and a complete investigation is now underway.
