The European Commission announced on Tuesday it was working closely with Greek authorities on an emergency plan against a potential coronavirus outbreak at Greek islands’ refugee camps.

The announcement follows Greece’s activation of the EU Civil Protection Mechanism to request housing units, sanitation and medical equipment, including oxygen generators, X-ray machines and wheelchairs.

Austria has provided 181 housing and sanitation booths via the EU Civil Protection Mechanism. The Commission will co-finance the shipping costs of the special booths, which are equipped with showers and toilets.

Due to Austria’s offer, “Greece will be better prepared to prevent the spread of the virus to vulnerable refugees and migrants. The EU is ready to provide further assistance,” said Crisis Management Commissioner and European Emergency Response Coordinator Janez Lenarcic.
