The letter which is a response to a recent letter sent by Dendias, emphasised that “Greece is a pillar of stability in the region”.
Pompeo also underlined that the US “disapproves” of the ongoing Turkish surveys for hydrocarbons in areas where Greece has potential jurisdiction. He added that these unilateral actions only succeed in increasing tensions in the region.
“Coercion, threats, intimidation and military activity will not resolve tensions in the Eastern Mediterranean,” he wrote.
The US Secretary of State also welcomed Greece’s commitment to resolving bilateral differences through dialogue and always based on international law, “to avoid an accident or other event at sea that could lead to a conflict between NATO allies.”
Pompeo concluded that the United States, like Greece, wants stability and prosperity in the Eastern Mediterranean, where cooperation will always be developed based on international law.
The above letter was accepted with great satisfaction at the Greek Foreign Ministry.
“A visit by the US Secretary of State to our country – even more so when it is the second within 12 months – is a political event, but especially given the time it took place, its agenda and the overall climate, I think it was very important. It produces results on many levels, it has a large national scope and I think that Greece, as a whole, has every reason to be satisfied with this visit,” Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said.
