Cyprus has sweltered through the first heatwave of the year with the temperature climbing to 40.6°C in Athalassa, Nicosia.

Many flocked to the seaside to cool down.

High temperatures are set to continue through the week.

Last year, the first 40°C recorded was on May 15 in Astromeritis, while in 2019, it was on May 28 at the Athalassa national forest park area.

According to the Cyprus Department of Meteorology, the temperature is expected to gradually drop on Wednesday and Thursday but remain significantly above the average seasonal levels inland and in the mountainous areas.
