New Zealand’s Prime Minister Jacinda Arden has been tested for Covid-19 as a precautionary measure, as her three-year-old daughter has caught the seasonal flu  a government spokeswoman said on Tuesday.

Ms Ardern, 41, will step down today due to illness and will be replaced by Deputy Prime Minister Grant Robertson, the spokeswoman added.

New Zealand has been virtually free of Covid-19 for months. No case of transmission to the community has been reported since February.
