An oil overflow from a cargo ship's tank caused marine pollution near the wharf of the port of Thessaloniki. More specifically, pollution from an iridescent film of petroleum products, covering an area of approximately 70 square metres, was found, as stated in an announcement by the Coast Guard.
The local management body activated, according to the same announcement, the emergency plan to deal with incidents of oil pollution, with floating barriers and the use of absorbent materials at the site.
The corresponding decontamination work was assigned to a private company by the ship's owning company, resulting in entrapment of the film within the floating barrier.
Both the captain and the first engineer of the cargo ship were apprehended for the incident, sailing was prohibited and the procedure for imposing administrative sanctions was initiated.
A preliminary investigation is being conducted by the Central Port Authority of Thessaloniki.
