Greek Archdiocese accuses its own priest of embezzlement crime

The Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of Australia announced on its Facebook page that Reverend Father Leslie Kostoglou from the Parish of St Gerasimos has been placed on ecclesiastical suspension.

According to their social media post, the Archdiocese is accusing Father Leslie of embezzlement, an offence under section 157 of the Crimes Act 1900, which carries a maximum penalty of ten years in prison.

According to the Archdiocese, the ‘suspension will be reviewed’ once Fr Leslie Kostoglou returns to the treasury of the Parish of St Gerasimos in Sydney, the money he has allegedly embezzled, or there is a relevant settlement with the Board of Directors of the Parish.

The unusual and quite extraordinary public accusation of a crime has raised eyebrows. Even more unusual is the suggestion that the suspension will be reviewed if the said Priest returns the alleged ’embezzled money’ to the Parish.

Father Leslie Kostoglou has engaged in remarkable community work and service for over 30 years. He enjoys an excellent reputation with parishioners and the entire community, so the accusations come as a shock.

Greek City Times will be following the case and provide updates.
