Promoting hitherto unknown areas of Greece has created a strong interest among Spaniards who visit the East Mediterranean country.

As pointed out in an event held in Madrid to promote the Region of Central Macedonia as a tourist destination for the whole year, the number of Spanish tourists who visited Greece in 2022 exceeded 20% of the corresponding number in 2019.

The event, organised by the Region of Central Macedonia and the Halkidiki Tourism Organisation, was attended by journalists, media representatives, travel agents and travel agencies, as well as business associations of the tourism industry.

All attendees had the opportunity to taste some of the most unique flavours of Greek gastronomy, such as dolmadakia, moussaka or traditional spinach pies.

The event was held under the auspices of the Greek Embassy in Madrid and with the support of the Hellenic Tourism Organization and the Hellenic-Spanish Chamber of Commerce.

Leonidas Tsiandis, responsible for Tourism Planning and Coordination sector of Central Macedonia, underlined that the region, surrounded by an impressive coastline, has the highest mountain peaks, so it is a privileged place for activities such as skiing, climbing, hiking and horse riding.

This has helped establish the region as a destination for lifestyle and wine tourism, he noted.

One of the areas in which the number of Spanish tourists has grown significantly is Halkidiki.
