An ethnic Azeri with Swedish citizen was arrested at the Eleftherios Venizelos International Airport in Athens on charges of a terrorist attack in Stockholm.

Emin Mirzayev was arrested by police in early July during passport control at Eleftherios Venizelos airport when preparting to fly to Istanbul. He was under a European arrest warrant for the offences of attempted incitement to destruction and violation of the law on flammable and explosive materials.

The 22-year-old, whom Swedish authorities accuse of terrorism by bombing, is in custody in Korydallos prison.

According to the European arrest warrant against Mirzayev, on 26 December 2022, the 22-year-old incited third persons to carry out a bomb attack against a residential building at 60 Dalgrand Street in the Enskededalen district of Stockholm.

The Azeri instructed other persons to hurl a container containing explosives and nails at the residential building with the aim of causing a fire and injuring the occupants.

“The assignment, instructions, and suggestions were given by the wanted person through a cryptographic communication system,” the European arrest warrant states.

On the same day and the following day, December 27, 2022, Mirzayev, allegedly instructed again third persons on how to handle a grenade that was used in a new bombing in the same area and location. The 22-year-old is accused of using the same cryptographic communication system to give instructions on how to handle the grenade and how to throw it.

Between 28 and 31 December 2022, according to the European arrest warrant, the accused once again instigated third persons to manufacture and manipulate an explosive device consisting of a battery, fuse, and explosive material, with the end result being the construction of a bomb, which was used on 31 December in an attack that occurred on Ervallakroken 11 in the town of Farsta, which is located 8 km from Stockholm.

For this bombing too, 22-year-old Mirzayev is believed to be responsible for its design. It is noted that the bomb was placed at the entrance of a residential building where it exploded, causing extensive damage to the property.

The suspect denies the charges through his Greek lawyer.
