Police have reported that an unidentified individual approached the Jedit Mosque in the old Limassol port at approximately 1.15am. The perpetrator threw firecrackers in bottles containing flammable liquid, causing damage to the entrance and walls of the mosque.
CCTV cameras in the area captured the incident, showing a person on foot approaching the building and throwing an object twice in quick succession. Police officers conducted on-site investigations.
The opposition Disy party released a statement condemning the attack and cautioned against any attempts to "politicize" the incident, emphasizing that such acts of violence are not representative of the culture and civilization of the people.
The Muslim foundation Evkaf also condemned the arson attack, expressing their disapproval of the unidentified individuals' assault on their historic mosque and religious values. They acknowledged the fortunate absence of worshippers during the incident, as there were no casualties.
Both Evkaf and the right-wing party urged the authorities to promptly solve the crime and bring the perpetrators to justice.
This incident follows another occurrence at the same mosque on Friday, during which a large number of primarily Syrian Muslims gathered outside for Friday prayers and blocked the street with carpets without informing the authorities. Police officers were present to discreetly enforce order, and subsequently, a group of Syrians protested against Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in the vicinity of the mosque.
