On Thursday afternoon, a 32-year-old American tourist in Gavdos, who had become the fear and terror of the island's residents for four days, was caught by the police as he walked around naked on beaches and masturbated in front of young girls.
He was arrested after a lawsuit was filed against him by a Greek couple after he had first broken into their house and chased the owner.
According to Proto Thema, the 32-year-old man had arrived on the island at the beginning of August and was free camping on the nudist beach. Last Wednesday, however, he started his sick activity by walking naked on the beach of Sarakinikos and showing off his genitals to young women.
The mayor of the island, Lilian Stefanaki, said the 32-year-old was active in the nudist community and allegedly committed indecent acts against three women.
"He had created some problems on the island. He had come around August 8th and was there in the nudist movement. He lived on the beach, inside the campsite and masturbated naked in front of girls on the beach of Sarakinikos. Two women complained that he masturbated naked in front of them," she said.
"At the same time, he entered a house. He threatened to rape the owner," continued the mayor, adding that it was impossible to communicate with him as he was under the influence of alcohol or other substances.
"It was not easy to get along with him. He was under the influence of something, I don't know what. The people here knew him; they had seen what he was doing and pointed him out to the police who arrested him," Stefanaki said.
On Thursday afternoon, the 32-year-old was spotted on a nearby beach by men from the Gavdos Police Station and the Chania Department. He was brought in by force as he was hitting the police.
The young tourist was arrested on the charges of violence against Officials and Judicial Persons, Unlawful Violence and Insult of Genital Decency and was taken to the Prosecutor's Office of Chania.
The 32-year-old American was temporarily released while the prosecutor requested that he undergo a psychiatric examination.
