Turkish media blame the US for not helping Greece in the Evros fire

Evros fire

Under the title: "The US is targeted for the fires in Greece", the Turkish media outlet Ensonhaber claims that there are reactions in our country to the non-American help in extinguishing the fires in Evros despite Washington maintaining a major military presence in the region.

"The forest fires have occurred for ten days in  Alexandroupoli and Evros. At the heart of the reactions is that the US, which has turned the area into a military base, does not provide any aid to Greece," the publication states.

"Since August 19, the burned forest area has exceeded 720,000 acres. This fire is the largest recorded on European soil in recent years," the report added.

The publication refers to the US military presence in Alexandroupoli, pointing out that one of Europe's most influential American bases operates in the area, with particular value due to the war in Ukraine.

"Alexandroupoli became one of the most important logistics bases of the US military in Europe, especially after the war in Ukraine. Most arms shipments to Europe are made through Alexandroupoli," the article states.

"Thousands of American tanks, helicopters, munitions and military personnel were moved here and there to the interior of the N.E. Europe. As part of the defence cooperation agreement signed in 2021, Athens provided the barracks of the 156th Motorized Artillery Battalion to the USA as a base."
