The day in Evros concludes without active fire fronts and with the return of the residents of Lefkimmi to their homes. The strong ground and aerial firefighting forces made superhuman efforts to keep the settlement untouched by the raging firestorm that approached within breathing distance yesterday evening. Despite achieving containment on the two latest fronts in Lefkimmi and in a stream north of Soufli, and the decrease in intensity of the northeastern winds blowing in the area, firefighting forces remain for monitoring and surveillance of the areas affected by the fire, in order to address any potential rekindling. With the flames that burned in the prefecture for days now extinguished and the settlements safe, the mayor of Soufli, Panagiotis Kalakikos, states to the AMNA news agency that we can now speak of a return to normalcy and starting tomorrow, the focus will be on planning the next day with an emphasis on the recovery of the region's economy through a special development support plan for the affected professions.
