The sale of F-35s to Greece is "unfreezing"

American F-35 fighter jet. Greece receive

On the day Bob Menendez officially faced corruption charges, it became known that Washington intended to end the impasse with the sale of F-35s to Greece and "unfreeze" the whole process, which seems "stuck".

As is known, the Philhellenic senator is one of the four who have signed the approval of the sale of the F-35 to Greece, with the signatures having already been collected since last June.

As ERT's envoy to Washington, Lena Argiri, reported today, the American government now appears to realise that an even longer delay in selling F-35 fighters could send "wrong messages" to Athens.

Thus, as reported by information from the American capital, "it is a matter of a few weeks to send the official notification of the government to Congress", essentially closing the formal part in the process of selling fighter aircraft to our country.

The entire delay seems to be attributed to the Biden administration's effort to ensure Sweden's accession to NATO, based on Erdogan's political commitment to bring Stockholm's entry into the Alliance to the Turkish National Assembly on October 1 for approval.

In any case, with these data, October is expected to be a month of development for the sale of the F-35 in Athens.

It is recalled, however, that as early as March 2021 and in his statements on Proto Thema, the then US ambassador in Athens, Geoffrey R. Pyatt linked the sale of the F-35 to Athens with the completion of the upgrade of 84 Greek F- 16 in the Viper version, until 2027. So far, Greece has received ten of them.
