Government Officials Meet to Address Worsening Weather Conditions in Thessaly Region

Climate Crisis and Civil Protection Minister Vasilis Kikilias will be travelling to Larisa on Sunday due to worsening weather conditions predicted for the Thessaly region.

The area is still trying to recover from the devastation caused by Storm Daniel. A meeting was held on Sunday at the civil protection service, attended by Kikilias and other relevant ministers and officials. The meeting discussed updates based on the latest scientific data and preparatory action to address the new wave of bad weather expected on Monday evening. Decisions were made, including the closure of schools and selected public services in Thessaly for Monday-Wednesday. State services will be on high alert, and local authorities were given tasks such as clearing river beds and repairing dams. The fire brigade and the Hellenic Police are prepared with additional personnel and vehicles stationed in the region. The armed forces are already operating in the area with personnel and equipment.

An SMS message via the 112 emergency number has been sent to residents of the Thessaly region, the regional unit of Fthiotida, the northern part of the island of Evia and the Sporades Islands warning of strong storms and hailstorms from Monday to Wednesday.

Specifically, the message states: “Dangerous weather phenomena (strong storms, hailstorms) from the morning hours of (Monday) and for the next two 24 hours in…Thessaly, Sporades, Fthiotida & North Evia. Limit movements during the duration and follow the instructions of the authorities”.
