The individual accused of kidnapping Stuart MacGill, the brother of his former partner, has now also been charged in connection with the same alleged drug importation scheme that led to the cricketer's arrest.
Stuart MacGill, aged 52, was arrested earlier this month at Chatswood police station and charged with knowingly participating in the distribution of a significant commercial quantity of drugs. Marino Sotiropoulos, the brother of MacGill's then-partner, was apprehended at Kogarah police station on Tuesday afternoon and faces two charges related to the supply of a significant commercial quantity of drugs.
Law enforcement alleges that both individuals were involved in the same attempt to import a one-kilogram brick of cocaine valued at $300,000.
Sotiropoulos is the brother of MacGill's former girlfriend, Maria Meagher, who is not implicated in any wrongdoing.
The charges against MacGill and Sotiropoulos stem from a police investigation into the alleged abduction of MacGill from his residence in Cremorne in April 2021. During this incident, MacGill was allegedly forced into a vehicle, taken to Bringelly on the western outskirts of Sydney, and subjected to assault and threats by three individuals before his release.
In a podcast interview with former teammate Shane Lee, MacGill humorously recalled his initial thoughts during the alleged kidnapping, noting the absence of underwear.
