The leaders of nine Mediterranean and southern European countries, the so-called "Med9" met on Friday in Malta for talks focused on exploding numbers of migrants. An EU agreement to deal with the problem, however, may still be out of reach.

Greek Premier Kyriakos Mitsotakis and French President Emmanuel Macron discussed issues of bilateral and European interest ahead of next week’s European Political Community Summit and informal European Council in Granada (October 5-6) on the sidelines of a meeting of nine southern European Union countries met in Malta on Friday, government sources said.

Mitsotakis told Macron that Greece “will remain consistent” in its policy of guarding its borders, while adding that cooperation of member states is needed to prevent departures from third countries and to discourage traffickers’ networks from putting people on boats, the same sources said.

The two leaders also discussed the latest developments in Ukraine
