Lefkada Xenophon Verginis

As of Sunday, Xenophon Verginis, the new mayor of Lefkada for the next five years, was elected the first time he ran for office at the age of 84!

He was elected in the first round with a percentage of 48.87% against the 28.47% collected by the outgoing mayor Charalambos Kalos.

In the past, he had been a university professor, a member of parliament with the New Democracy and a director of organisations.

After the elections, in the first interview with a local media outlet, he emphasised that he would start with the issues of everyday life on the island and pay the most attention to them.

This he pointed out, and before the election, he pointed out that the reason he is involved in local government is because, for him, it is a challenge.

"It is impossible to watch this municipality on a downward path, which is shown by everyday life and the emblematic projects. Is it possible that you can't feel that you are being managed from somewhere, that there is someone who is interested and has to put things to provide a solution?" he said.
