Greek Prime Minister sets Freddy Beleris mayoral appointment as precondition for Albania EU membership talks

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has set the appointment of imprisoned Greek-Albanian Freddy Beleris to his rightful position as mayor of the  town of Heimarra as a precondition of EU membership talk for Albania.

"We firmly and unequivocally support the accession perspective of the Western Balkans," stated Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis during the Berlin Process Summit in Tirana.

"While we are strong advocates for the Western Balkan countries joining the European family, we recognize that this path is challenging and requires significant adjustments to meet European standards," he added.

Mitsotakis also emphasized the non-negotiable principle of the European Union and Greece regarding the rule of law. "Respect for the rule of law should be demonstrated in all aspects of governance in the Western Balkan countries," he stressed. However, he expressed concern about recent developments in Albania, specifically the case of the imprisoned Mayor of Himare, Fredi Beleri.

The Greek Prime Minister highlighted, "I respect the independence of the Albanian Judiciary and do not intend to interfere in its operations. Nevertheless, Fredi Beleri has the right to be sworn in as Mayor of Himare, even while in custody. This right is enshrined in the Albanian constitutional order and fully compatible with European standards of the rule of law."

Mitsotakis underlined the importance of resolving the Beleri issue, as it has implications for Greek-Albanian relations and Albania's negotiations with the EU. "The resolution of this matter is a necessary condition for Greece to support the start of Albania's EU negotiations," he stated. He expressed hope for a cooperative and positive resolution of the issue during discussions with Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama.

In conclusion, Mitsotakis affirmed his intention to discuss the Beleri issue with Rama, emphasizing Greece's clear position. "I do not aim to interfere with Albania's independent judiciary, but I will strongly advocate for Fredi Beleri to be sworn in, even while in custody. I hope that together we can address this matter in a constructive manner," he concluded.
